Johannes Meurs, Kriminalhauptkommissar (detective chief superintendent)
Kriminalkommissar Johannes Meurs (born 1959) has been a police officer in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW) for 42 years and a victim care officer in the district of Cleves since 1999.
He became interested in the situation of relatives who have lost a loved one to a sudden and unnatural death by accident or similar in 1998. As a result, he helped initiate the project “1 Jahr danach” (one year on) organised by the police in Cleves. During the project, he was involved in describing the needs of individuals during and in the aftermath of a catastrophe and in developing the results for implementation by the police in Cleves. Over the years, Johannes Meurs has amassed evaluations of more than 800 relevant cases. His experience is much sought-after in Germany.

Born 1966, ethics professor at the Fachhochschule für öffentliche Verwaltung NRW (university of applied sciences for public administration, FHöV), also the state coordinator for the subject ethics. Member of the KiWA board of advisers of the Bundesfachverband unbegleitete minderjährige Flüchtlinge (Berlin), founding member of the Institut für Geschichte und Ethik der öffentlichen Verwaltung at the FHöV NRW.
Research interests: the ethics of migration and asylum administration, the ethics of protecting victims, the police and human rights/the police’s responsibility to promote human rights, the ethics of fighting terrorism, administrative ethics.
