Improve your writing

German as an academic language

Texts are a key part of the humanities: The objects you research are often comprised of texts and your research results are also published in writing. Understanding and being able to write academic texts is a central requirement during your studies. At the start, not all students possess the kind of sophisticated writing skills required to succeed, which means that some of you will need to acquire the necessary skills as you go along.

Linguistic correctness and articulateness in academic language - our courses

As part of its Deutsch für Geisteswissenschaftler_innen – Übungen zu Grammatik und Ausdruck im Schriftdeutschen (German for humanities students – grammar and expression in written language) programme, the Department of Literature offers writing and grammar courses in several formats and focusing on various topics. The courses are aimed at humanities students who want to improve their writing skills. They cover relevant linguistic basics in the areas of vocabulary, syntax, coherence and summary. Analysing texts from primary and secondary literature, discussing student texts as well as a variety of writing and grammar exercises will help you express yourself clearly, concisely and correctly - in short: appropriately.

You can find our courses in the electronic course catalogue in ZEuS by visiting both the general and specific transferable skills section for your study programme.

The preparatory course for new students is a compact course offered at the beginning of every winter semester. It serves as an introduction to the linguistic requirements of academic writing.

Courses A, B and C, which take place during the semester, cover and consolidate various topics.

In addition, our contract lecturer Hinrich Kück regularly offers a "Schreibwerkstatt" (writing workshop) , i.e. writing tutorials that can help prepare you for writing an academic thesis.

Schreibwerkstatt (writing workshop to prepare you for writing an academic thesis)

Academic writing is a key academic skill that all students must acquire. Our teaching staff have noticed with some concern that many written assignments submitted by students do not meet the required standards for academic writing. Besides structural and formal deficits, texts prepared by students (seminar papers and final theses, written presentations, exams) also reflect linguistic deficiencies (punctuation, orthography, grammar, style). To rectify this, the department has decided to establish a “Schreibwerkstatt” (writing workshop).

The course is aimed at all students and seeks to help them enhance their individual writing skills through a range of measures.

3 ECTS credits

regular and active class participation (and contribution to discussions), writing short texts
