University of Pretoria

Pretoria, South Africa

The formerly Afrikaans-oriented University of Pretoria (then known as Transvaal University) is one of South Africa’s leading universities with around 40,000 students and an increasingly research-oriented profile. The secure main campus near the city center of Pretoria covers 24 hectares and also accommodates many student residences (with guaranteed spaces for international students). The University of Pretoria has been a partner of the University of Konstanz since 2001. Their partnership with the program “Studies in European Culture” is based in the Department of Modern European Languages, and more specifically the partner degree program “African-European Cultural Relations”, which was started in collaboration with Konstanz and studies Europe from a South African perspective. For students visiting from Konstanz, the main fields of interest are international relations (housed in the Deptartment of Political Science), historical social dynamics, and current migration and security policy issues in contemporary African-European relations. The Centre for Human Rights and the World Literatures program (housed in the English Department) are of interest as well.
