Lecture by Prof. Dr. Hubert Zapf (Augsburg): "Cultural Ecology, the Environmental Humanties, and the Ecological Archives of Literature"

July 3, 2019, 3:15-4:45 PM, Room H 307 organized by Prof. Dr. Timo Müller, American Studies

Our conceptions of nature and the environment are mediated through culture. Coffee-table books and Hollywood movies, nature poetry and travel accounts shape our understanding of what nature is, what it looks like, and how one should act toward it. In recent years these interconnections have been examined in the Environmental Humanities, a field of research that focuses on the cultural and social dimensions of nature. In Hubert Zapf, the university welcomes an internationally recognized theorist of the Environmetnal Humanities. In his lecture, Zapf will provide a short introduction to the field and draw on German and American examples to show the importance of literature as an archive of our ideas about nature and culture.
