Silvia Mergenthal arbeitet im Augenblick an zwei Buchprojekten, von denen sich das eine mit der Darstellung der Stadt Edinburgh in der Kriminalliteratur (anhand dreier historischer Kriminalfälle und deren Repräsentation in unterschiedlichen – auch medizinischen und juristischen – Diskursen) beschäftigt, während das andere Konstruktionen von Männlichkeit in der Weltkriegsliteratur Großbritanniens und Australiens beschreibt.

Silvia Mergenthal's research has two foci at the moment: she will first complete a book-length study of three Edinburgh criminal cases and their representations in a variety of discourses over a period of about 350 years. Her most recent project, however, is concerned with constructions of masculinity in British and Australian WWI literature. 

Kurzbiographie/Biographical Note 

Silvia Mergenthal studierte Anglistik und Germanistik an den Universitäten Erlangen-Nürnberg, Austin/Texas und St. Andrews/ Schottland. Sie promovierte (1989) und habilitierte (1994) in Erlangen; seit 1997 ist sie Professorin für Anglistik und Allgemeine Literaturwissenschaft an der Universität Konstanz.

Silvia Mergenthal war unter anderem Gleichstellungsbeauftragte der Universitäten Erlangen-Nürnberg (1995-1997) und Konstanz (2003-2004), Mitglied des Fachbereichs- und des Sektionsrates, Studiendekanin (2008) und Sprecherin des Fachbereichs Literaturwissenschaft (2003 sowie 2008-2010).

Silvia Mergenthal ist Mitglied des Anglistenverbandes (Beirat 1999-2001, Präsidentin 2004-2007, Vizepräsidentin 2007-2010), der ASLS (Association for Scottish Literary Studies), der IAUPE (International Association of University Professors of English), der International Scott Society, des Deutschen Hochschulverband, der Deutsche Gesellschaft für Englische Romantik und der Society for British Cultural Studies.

Silvia Mergenthal read English and German at the universities of Erlangen/Germany, Austin/Texas and St Andrews/Scotland. Since 1997 she has been professor of English and Literary Theory at the University of Konstanz/Germany. She has published extensively on 18^th and 19^th century British poetry and prose, but she is also interested in contemporary literature, with a particular focus on constructions of identity at the interface of gender and nation, in crime fiction across the centuries, and in the spatial turn in literary and cultural studies.

Silvia Mergenthal has served as equal opportunities officer at Erlangen-Nürnberg and Konstanz; she has also been a long-term member of the faculty councils at both universities, and, at Konstanz, dean of studies, and (twice) head of the department of literature.

Silvia Mergenthal is a member of the Anglistenverband (board member, 1999-2001, President 2004-2007, Vice President 2007-2010), the ASLS (Association for Scottish Literary Studies), IAUPE (International Association of University Professors of English), International Scott Society, Deutscher Hochschulverband, Deutsche Gesellschaft für Englische Romantik, Society for British Cultural Studies.
